Waveguide Receiver Protector

The continuous evolution of radar systems creates an ever more complex RF power environment in which sensitive receivers must operate and survive. Teledyne limiters deliver vital protection for a wide range of receivers, providing protection from L-Band through to Ka-Band (1 - 40GHz) and peak power levels up to 1MW with unparalleled low insertion loss levels.

Waveguide Limiters At a Glance

  • Multiple stages concatenated to increase the overall level of attenuation ensuring lowest possible leakage levels
  • Parallel PIN diode elements increase the power capabilities whilst maintaining fast switching thereby ensuring swift recovery from high isolation to low insertion loss state - improving short-range radar capabilities.
  • Passive Schottky bias networks improving power withstand and switch-on times.
  • Digital or analogue controlled attenuation
  • STC (sensitivity time control) <
  • Noise source
  • Transitions between RF media (waveguide / coax / stripline)
  • Built in test equipment (BITE)
  • Blanking
  • Power detectors
  • ITAR Free

Additional Information

C Band Receiver Protector
designed for a weather radar application

Teledyne uses a range of custom packaged in-house specified PIN diodes across our full range of waveguide limiters.

The PIN diode is embodied in the solid-state section of the waveguide limiter, providing the high levels of isolation required to protect sensitive receiver hardware.

Whilst the solid-state limiter can handle all normal operating power levels, in extreme cases of very high peak operational power levels, or where a high-power fault condition may persist, a gas switch can be included to significantly enhance power-handling capability.

The gas-plasma stage (Gas switch or Pre-TR Tube) takes the form of a sealed quartz tube that can be fitted on the input of the solid-state section of the limiter. Teledyne utilizes a range of gas mixes, which can be customized to individual requirements (optionally including radioactive priming).

Additional system functions can be incorporated within the limiter offering a net SWaP-C (Size, Weight and Power - Cost) benefit over discrete components.
