Gallium Nitride (GaN) High Electron Mobility Transistor (HEMT) semiconductors are a viable alternative to vacuum tube technologies for many
power amplifier applications. Low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) increase signal power coming from the antenna while adding as little noise and distortion as possible. Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) Field Effect Transistors (FET) devices are typically used in low-noise amplifiers in the microwave frequency region because silicon transistors can’t provide the required gain and noise performance. The FET devices are typically very sensitive to power and best protected by a limiter/receiver protector device. For most applications a flat gain response across the operating frequency band is a highly desirable amplifier property. However, the gain response of practical amplifiers fluctuate with changes in frequency and temperature. Introducing a Teledyne Lincoln Microwave Equalizer Amplifier at the input of a power amplifier device (TWT or SSPA) can flatten the gain response of wide-band microwave transmitter systems.
